SEHA, a subsidiary of\u00a0PureHealth, the largest healthcare group in the Middle East, proudly announces the remarkable recovery of\u00a0Mayar\u00a0Al\u00a0Balushi, a young patient who overcame a rare and life-threatening illness thanks to the expert care at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Only two weeks ago,\u00a0Mayar, a previously healthy child, was admitted to SKMC, extremely unwell, after previously being transferred to us, urgently, from SSMC with fulminant hepatitis, Influenza\u00a0A\u00a0and encephalitis – a rare and poorly understood combination.\u00a0Mayar\u00a0began to deteriorate quickly and developed secondary\u00a0haemophagocytic\u00a0lymphohistiocytosis\u00a0(HLH), an extreme immune response requiring emergent, intensive therapy after transfer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mayar’s\u00a0recovery was due to\u00a0a very complicated\u00a0and carefully orchestrated course of treatment which included: intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), plasma exchange, steroids,\u00a0anakinra, intrathecal methotrexate, broad-spectrum\u00a0antimicrobials\u00a0and very extensive supportive care. Her care team included members from\u00a0paediatric\u00a0intensive care, gastroenterology,\u00a0haematology, neurology, rheumatology, infectious diseases, nephrology, immunology, metabolic genetics, and general\u00a0paediatrics.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On 15 May,\u00a0Mayar\u2019s\u00a0condition\u00a0stabilised\u00a0enough to transfer to the\u00a0paediatric\u00a0ward. Today, 23 May, she left the hospital healthy, strong, and smiling\u2014a testament to her resilience and the dedication of the SKMC team.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMayar\u2019s\u00a0recovery is more than a medical success; it is a story of teamwork, determination, and the indomitable spirit of a child,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Dr.\u00a0Shatha Mohamed Al\u00a0Taee, Consultant\u00a0Paediatrician\u00a0at SKMC<\/span><\/b>, who closely oversaw her care. \u201cThis was a collective effort, and I am immensely proud of every member of our\u00a0paediatric\u00a0team who supported her with skill, compassion, and heart.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
